BOOST WELLNESS
What is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy, aka cold therapy, is an increasing popular therapy that provides a variety of Wellness benefits.
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is the therapeutic application of extremely cold dry air, usually between −110°C and −150°C. The key providers of this therapy include professionals involved in physical therapy, wellness, chiropractic, athletic training, and holistic medicine due to its ability to speed up the healing properties in some cases.
Whole-body cryotherapy stimulates the body's natural healing abilities. WBC uses extreme cold to induce responses on three levels: the circulatory system, the energy meridians, and the nervous system.
The history of whole body cryotherapy began in Japan, developed in Europe, and migrated to the U.S. Clinical studies are numerous and focused on the treatment of pain and inflammation from sports injuries, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis.
Cryotherapy is suitable for everyone from professional athletes, to minors (with parental consent) and the general, health-conscious public, Wellness @ Wilston are helping clients see excelled results through 3 minutes of exposure to subfreezing temperatures.

Benefits
Faster Muscle Repair And Recover
Cryotherapy is the perfect way to get the most out of your exercise regime by helping to flush your body off stored lactic acid as well as reduce the inflammation that can occur in your muscles from extended periods of training. This means that you can speed up your recovery time and enhance your performance like many elite athletes.
Removes Toxins
During a whole body cryotherapy session, your body goes through a process called vascular constriction which sends all of your blood to the core of your body to protect your vital organs. The heart pumps harder and blood flows faster, circulating through the cardiovascular system. This means that the blood becomes oxygen-enriched and is flooded with good enzymes and nutrients. By increasing circulation and blood flow in this way it helps the body in the removal of toxins, and improves the efficiency in organs aids the body in being able to flush out toxins and other waste products.
Reduces Aches, Inflammation and Pains
The cold temperatures cause your heart to divert the oxygen-rich blood from joints, limbs, spine, and muscles to feed the vital organs which means that inflammation can be immediately decreased. Cryotherapy also elevates anti-inflammatory chemicals within the body which reduces inflammation systemically making it perfect for those with chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, post-surgery wounds, and swelling.
Accelerates Weight Loss
In the extreme cold, even though only short, our body fights to restore its core temperature which swiftly raises our metabolism, frezzes the fat cells and burns calories as it aims to generate heat. This means that a single short session (under 5 minutes) can burn anywhere between 400 and 800 calories (equivalent to about 30 minutes in the sauna).
Heals Skin & Boosts Anti-Aging
In addition to the powerful effects on the skin of detoxification, cryotherapy stimulates collagen production while reducing cellulite. The sub-zero temperatures activate cellular repair mechanisms to reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone. This helps to slow the signs of aging and also helps the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, blemishes and acne.
Lower Stress and Anxiety
When the brain is exposed for short periods of time to extreme cold temperatures it triggers an increase in the hormone and neurotransmitter norepinephrine which lowers stress while elevating your mood and dramatically increasing your focus. Many cryotherapy clients report a lowering in anxiety and stress levels which helped with restless sleep and even insomnia.
Boosts Immune System
Whole-body cryotherapy helps to release large amounts of Endorphins, which in turn helps to reduce your cortisol levels. This helps with your body’s immune system by boosting your body’s organs cellular functions so you can have good cell growth. It has also been shown to increase the number of white blood cells (our body’s main defense against infection).
What To Expect
During a session, we manage and monitor the treatment with temperatures between -130 to -150 degrees Celsius with a maximum treatment time of 3 minutes.
You will then step into the chamber and close the door and the operator will lift you up to the correct height for your treatment. Next, you will take off your robe and pass it to the operator over the top of the sauna. Every 30 seconds we will get you to turn slightly. Once your 3 minutes are up the operator will hand the robe back before you exit the Cryosauna. Your privacy is our highest priority so if more comfortable we can pull the shutter across so you have complete privacy.
Once in the chamber, your circulatory system is performing multiple survival mechanisms and focuses on your internal organs by reducing the blood flow to your extremities. Once the session has started you do feel quite cold but it’s very tolerable.
After the treatment, your body commences working hard to circulate the re-oxygenated and replenished blood around your body to return its temperature back to normal. This releases endorphins which make you feel happy and give you a general feeling of well-being, it also assists in reducing pain and inflammation.
Our clients say they feel more energized, alive, and physically rejuvenated due to the improvement in the overall wellbeing, speeding up the regeneration of the body, combating muscle soreness, rheumatic and osteopathic pain, eliminating inflammation, increasing the body’s immunity, and supporting the freedom of movement.
This euphoric feeling can last a few days.
