Why gut issues rarely start in the gut...

If you’re dealing with bloating, reflux, constipation, loose bowels, fatigue or inflammation, it’s easy to assume the problem must be your gut.
So you clean up your diet. You cut things out. You add supplements.
And sometimes… nothing changes.
This is where so many people get stuck, frustrated and confused.
What I see every week in the clinic is this
Most gut issues don’t actually start in the gut.
They start with overload.
The gut is a responder, not the root
Your gut is deeply connected to the rest of your body. It responds to what’s happening in your nervous system, hormones, liver and detox pathways.
When those systems are under pressure, the gut often shows the symptoms.
That’s why two people can eat the same food and have completely different reactions. One digests it fine. The other bloats, cramps or feels inflamed.
It’s not just about what you eat. It’s about what your body can process and clear.
Stress slows everything down
When you’re under constant stress, even low level stress that feels normal, your body shifts into survival mode.
Digestion slows.Detox slows.Healing slows.
Blood flow is redirected away from the gut and toward keeping you alert and functioning. Over time, this affects bowel movements, enzyme production, stomach acid and the balance of bacteria in the gut.
You can be eating all the right foods, but if your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight, your body simply isn’t prioritising digestion.
Hormones add to the load
Hormones are meant to be processed and cleared by the liver and bowels.
When hormones shift, especially during perimenopause, menopause or after long term stress, the detox system has more work to do.
If the liver and bowels can’t keep up, excess hormones recirculate. This can show up as bloating, fluid retention, inflammation, mood changes and fatigue.
Again, the gut takes the hit, but it’s not the starting point.
Medications change the terrain
Antibiotics, antidepressants, hormonal medications and even common over the counter drugs can change how the gut functions.
They can alter gut bacteria, slow bowel movements, irritate the gut lining or increase the burden on the liver.
For many people, gut symptoms don’t appear until months or years after medication use. By then, the connection isn’t obvious, but the body remembers.
Toxins quietly build up
We’re exposed to toxins every day through water, food, plastics, skincare, cleaning products and the environment.
Your body is designed to clear them, but only if detox pathways are open and supported.
When the liver, bowels or lymphatic system are sluggish, toxins don’t exit efficiently. The body holds on to protect you.
That holding on can look like bloating, inflammation, skin issues, headaches, fatigue or a heavy feeling in the body.
Why food alone isn’t enough
This is why eating well doesn’t always fix gut issues.
Food matters, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
If detox pathways are blocked, your body can’t move waste out, no matter how clean your diet is. In fact, adding more fibre, supplements or restrictions can sometimes make symptoms worse.
The answer isn’t to try harder. It’s to support flow.

Supporting the body, not forcing it
True gut healing happens when the body feels supported, not pushed.
That might mean gently improving bowel flow, supporting the liver, calming the nervous system and reducing the toxic load so the gut can finally do its job.
This is the philosophy behind everything I do in clinic and why I created Internal Shred.
It’s not about punishment or extremes. It’s about helping the body clear what it’s been holding onto so digestion, energy and clarity can return naturally.
If you’ve been blaming yourself or your food choices, please know thisYour body isn’t broken. It’s overloaded.
And when you support it properly, it has an incredible ability to heal.
